When times are tough, you can always buy the best Italian pizza and have it delivered to your door. Nevertheless, making authentic Italian pizza gets easier with each trial. Simply follow these steps and soon you will have your guests longing for an extra slice of your delicious pizza.
Step 1. Check Your Ingredients
If you want to know how to make pizza, you need to have the right ingredients. Your authentic Italian pizza needs authentic Italian ingredients. You can customize your pizza recipe by adding or taking away some ingredients. Luckily, most of the ingredients are commonplace items that may already be in your pantry. For our example today, you will require:
- Dry Yeast
- Olive oil
- Toppings such as Italian sausage, pepperoni, turkey pepperoni, black olives
- Cheese such as Mozzarella and cheddar.

Step 2. Prepare Your Working Surface
Thoroughly clean your table top. It should be a flat, sturdy surface. Make sure the working surface is completely dry before you start working on the dough.
Step 3. Prepare The Dough
Ideally, you should prepare your dough at least a day before cooking your favorite authentic Italian pizza. Heap enough flour on the surface. Mix warm water, yeast, olive oil, salt, and sugar in a bowl. The warm water helps the yeast react better. So does keeping the dough overnight to “cure”.
With your dough in a heap, make a depression at the top and pour in ⅓ cup of the water mixture. Use your hands or a fork to slowly mix the flour with the water. Don’t worry if at first it feels too wet. Gradually add water and flour as necessary and work it up to a sticky consistency.
Use your fingers and fists to knead the dough for about 10 minutes. This releases the flour’s proteins and adds the penetration of yeast, water, salt, and sugar. The results is a strong, stretchy, and yummy dough.
To add up some extra flavors to your pizza, you may put in some oregano, parmesan, garlic, parsley, black pepper, or rosemary during the kneading process. You may also use a stand mixer, though I always find kneading by hand gives a more authentic texture and is way more satisfying.
Once done, transfer your dough into an oiled bowl. Cover with cling film and allow the dough to swell up to double its size. This is best done overnight.
Step 4. Proving and Shaping Your Dough
Retrieve your dough and divide it into balls. A standard measure is about 200g per ball. Roll each ball in your palms to ensure an even rise. Use a scissor motion by rolling the ball on the inner edges of your palm to give a pinched bottom and smooth rounded top.
Take a tray and scatter a light layer of flour on it. Place the balls evenly-spaced about an inch apart on the tray. The balls of dough will continue to slowly expand and when they are almost touching each other they are ready for shaping.
Using a pastry scraper, pick a ball and place it on your lightly floured working surface. Use your fingertips to firmly shape it into a flat circle of your desired size.
Step 5. Assembly and Baking
Switch on your oven and let it get to maximum temperature.

As the oven heats up, dust your baking tray with a light layer of flour then place your pizza base. Evenly spread your sauce onto the base then add your toppings as you desire.
